What College Kids Are Asking For This Year

The holidays are coming faster than we realize! I’m ahead of the game for once, this year, and I’ve finished the large majority of my shopping. My daughter and some friends came home for a surprise visit last weekend and helped me put together this list of recommended gifts for college students. The suggestions came with big thumbs up from my daughter and her sorority sisters. Take a look.

This is the Honest Outfitters Single or Double Camping Hammock With Tree Straps. It is available in a variety of color combinations as well as a choice between a single or double capacity hammock. What are these you ask? They are nylon hammocks that can basically hang between any two trees that are close enough together. According to the squad beside me, they are all over campus. The kids hang them up on nice days outside and do their studying. Great for camping and folds into a small carrying bag. Reasonably priced, starting at $29.99. You can get yours here.

This is along the same idea as the hammock and the girls tell me they are very popular around campus. It’s basically a blow up lounge chair. I’m told you kind of swing it around in the breeze and trap the air inside. It also folds up into a small carrying bag. Looks like it’s comfortable and fun. This one from Lonelyfish has the highest rating on Amazon and is available in three different colors. Also reasonably priced at $30.99. You can find yours here.

Next up is the Shark Nutri Ninja Pro Blender. This, I’m told, is the step up from the Magic Bullet. According to the ratings, I’m assuming these girls are right. At the time of writing this, it had 954, 4.5 star ratings on amazon, which exceeds the rating on the Magic Bullet. Don’t know why they love this? I’m being told that smoothies are a big part of their college diet and they are a healthy and quick substitute for breakfast on-the-go. The blender cup is also the cup you drink from and it comes with a leak proof lid. It’s priced at $67.54 and you can get yours here.

This recommendation from the girls for the Amazon Echo (Second Generation), I can personally attest to. I have one and I love it. I have the older model. This one has an improved speaker. I use mine to listen to music and to create shopping lists. Basically, whenever I’m out of something I say, “Alexa, add _____ to my shopping list.” Then when I go shopping I’ve got the list on my phone. My family uses it in this manner as well so it has worked out that now I know when someone in my home has used the last of something. The girls are laughing at me because they say it does a ton more stuff than I use it for but I’m okay with that. It comes in a few different styles for $99.99 and you can get yours here.

Maybe your student already has one, but if they don’t, I’m being told that a Keurig is a must. Apparently there’s no time to stop and charge an expensive coffee drink to my credit card for those early classes so she has to ‘settle’ for a Keurig cup…lol. Nice life, right? I had a hot pot in college and a small refrigerator – that’s it. This one is great because it is small and they like it because it comes in a few fun colors. It’s price is $69.99 and you can get yours here. Don’t forget the coffee pods!

I’m told noise cancelling headphones are a must for life in the dorms. They allow the kids to study undisturbed by the noises around them. These Mpow 059 Bluetooth Headphones Over Ear, Hi-Fi Stereo Wireless Headsets are an excellent choice. This model has over 6,000 4.5 star ratings on Amazon and are reasonably priced at $31.48. There are many more expensive brands but with lower ratings. These are available in a variety of colors. You can get yours here.

I have a iPhone 7 and I agree that this is a good suggestion. It’s a splitter that allows you to charge your iPhone and use your headphones at the same time. Currently, with this iPhone model you can only do one or the other. It’s a small item and would make a good stocking stuffer. Maybe not the most exciting gift but certainly a useful one. The iPhone 7 Adapter,HMIAO iPhone 7 Plus Headphones Adapter has over 40 perfect, 5-star ratings on Amazon and is $19.99. You can buy yours here.

I’m getting a wink-wink from my daughter with this suggestion as I know she really wants it. The Apple Watch Series 2, 38mm Rose Gold Aluminum Case with Pink Sand Sport Band is bound to be a big hit! It’s pricey at $359.99 and would certainly limit what else I bought her. Maybe if her grades qualify her for Santa’s good list, I’ll consider it. You can get yours here.It also comes in other colors and with other style bands.

I’m also getting the puppy eyes for these UGG Women’s Adirondack II Winter Boots. They are very cute and winter weather is coming but there’s no way I’m getting her the watch and the boots. Unfortunately for her, boots for $139.99 aren’t in the budget. Maybe grandma will step in for these. They can be found here. There are many other styles and colors to choose from and UGG is a reputable brand that’s been around for many years.

With my prodding, the girls gave me some suggestions that their boyfriends would like to get. Having an eleven-year-old boy is my only male child experience and he still likes toys. I guess these are toys for big boys. First, is this ICE Orb Levitating/Floating Wireless Portable Bluetooth Speaker. It is pretty cool and is highly rated. It’s a floating, blue-tooth speaker orb that floats and spins over a base. It’s $109.99 and works with any bluetooth enabled device. It can be found here.

I’ve seen virtual reality headsets around but just assumed they were very expensive. These 3D VR Headset Virtual Reality Glasses -for 3D Movies Video Games with Stereo Adjustable Headphone Compatible with All IOS/Android Smartphones have been presented to me and they are only $29.99. I wouldn’t think they would be good at that price but they have over 90, 5-star ratings. I haven never tried virtual reality headsets myself, but it seems pretty awesome. You can find yours here.

Adding in some group fun items, first up is Cards Against Humanity. Perfect for the college-age group and adults in general – definitely not for children. It’s a fun. Described by the manufacturer as the party game for horrible people. I’ve played and it’s fun and certainly revealing. If you have the first set of cards, there’s been several new sets made to keep it new. If you haven’t played, well, I’ll just tell you if you have a sense of humor and don’t mind some raunchy talk, it’s quite a fun game. The original box set is $25.99 and is available here.

This second group game I’m taking the girls’ recommendation for as I haven’t played. It’s called What Do You Meme? Because I haven’t personally played, I’ll let the manufacturer’s description explain it, “Party card game for friends for the social media generation. Think you’ve got what it takes to out-meme your friends IRL? Compete to create the funniest meme by pairing Caption Cards with the Photo Card in play. A rotating judge picks the best combination each round. Play until you’re hungry, at which point stop playing and order a pizza. The rules are simple. Each round, a rotating judge plays a Photo Card and everyone else plays a Caption Card to complete the meme. The judge decides the funniest pairing, and whoever played the winning Caption Card wins the round. Lather, rinse, repeat.” I’m told it’s as fun as Cards Against Humanity and not for young children. It’s $29.99 and I guess the girls haven’t steered me wrong because it has over 1,500 4.5 star ratings! You can take a look at it here.

There are many other highly-rated games that fall into this type of adult category so I’m not going to go through each one but you can see them here.

I wouldn’t have thought of this in a million years but my daughter says to put it in. Nerf guns?? Apparently quite fun to play in the dorm hallways and staircases – my daughter says it’s mostly the guys but not always. I suppose that could be fun and certainly allows them to blow off some steam. So, I’m adding Nerf Guns to the group fun recommendation and if anyone can provide feedback about this, I’d love to hear if this goes on at other colleges. You can find a wide selection here.

Hopefully this list will spark some creative gift ideas for your favorite college student!
